Tax Relief Legislation For Fire Commissions
|
|
|
|
Public and private water
companies would no longer be permitted to charge “stand by” fees, in addition
to the customary water usage charges, to residential customers served by a
water line, under proposed legislation, Assembly Bill A-3114, sponsored by
Assemblyman Ron Dancer and introduced on June 23, 2008.
Presently, residential
customers of water companies pay for the amount of water gallons used and in
addition, if their water service line is larger than two inches in diameter,
the water company charges a “stand by” fee for fire protection systems, i.e.
fire hydrants. Eliminating the “stand by” fees, regardless of the size of the
water line, will reduce the charges by water companies to our Fire Districts across
the State and bring property tax relief to all residents. If A-3114 is enacted,
only water usage from fire hydrants would be chargeable, not the “stand by”
fees.
Water companies charge Fire
Commissions for the fire hydrants’ stand by fees (in addition to usage) which
are factored into Fire Commission budgets and tax rates. By eliminating the
“stand by” fees, an additional tax relief benefit would be realized by all
property tax payers, regardless if served by a private water company or their
own private well. Assembly Bill A-3114 would further prohibit the Board of
Public Utilities from approving the water companies’ charges for “stand by”
fees for any fire protection system to residential customers served by a water
line.
