Downtown New Egypt Public Safety Grant Pursued
|
Public Safety Grants, from the N.J. Transportation
Planning Authority, are being pursued by the Plumsted Township Committee to
make Downtown New Egypt more pedestrian safe and bicycle friendly. According to
Stacy Perrine, of the Ocean County Planning Department, New Egypt is exactly
what the State Transportation Planning Authority looks for to conduct workshops
and assess towns for Public Safety Grant funding. New Egypt meets the criteria of an established downtown
and an approved “Town
Center” designation by
the State Planning Commission.
The
Township’s application for the Public Safety Grants is enhanced as the
Municipality is currently enrolled in the State’s “Plan Endorsement” process
and commits to short term goals to implement more pedestrian and bicycle
traffic safety improvements. One of the unique features of the State
Transportation Public Safety Grant program are the interactive planning
workshops that are literally conducted on sidewalks, parking lots and streets
of the downtown with interviews of shoppers, business merchants and licensed
drivers. Members of the workshop are comprised of professional planners, State,
County and Local Officials, all of whom spend time in the downtown personally
observing and experiencing, for example, the difficulties of trying to safely
cross the streets; the speed of vehicular traffic; the accessibility of using
bicycles and the availability of bike racks.
The
Public Safety Grant workshops in Downtown New Egypt with the State
Transportation Planning Authority officials are being scheduled for early
September. The amount of grant awards vary, but Plumsted is envisioning
improvements in value similar to the 2006 Toms River Public Safety Grant award
of $242,000.
