Corporate Sponsor Funds Ballfield
Upgrade |
The Girl's Softball Field at our Recreation Park is being
improved to tournament play standards at no taxpayer expense as a result of an
innovative Corporate sponsored "Athletic Field Maintenance Day" on August 23rd.
Local resident and Recreation Committee member, Marc Russo, organized the Lesco
/ John Deere Landscapes' Athletic Field Maintenance Day as a hands on
demonstration for constructing, renovating and maintaining athletic fields with
the Girl's Softball Field being the model recipient of improvements.
The Lesco/John Deere Landscapes' Athletic Field
Maintenance Day provided opportunities for business vendors from around the
State to participate in lectures, as well as, demonstrations to earn New Jersey
Continuing Education Certification credits. With the Girl's Softball Field
being the model for demonstrations, respected professionals provided for a full
day's working agenda that included Bill Buttler, Head Grounds Keeper for the
Trenton Thunder ball field and stadium; Brad Parks, from Rutgers University
speaking on weed control; and James Gavigan, Certified Sports Turf Manager,
providing expertise on grass seed selection for sports fields.
The Girls' Softball Field now has a new outfield warning
track and an all weather infield mix surface through the generosity of Steve
Ohnsman, representative for "The Pro's Choice Products." Mike Reed, of
Lesco/John Deere Landscapes provided calibration training for granular and
liquid field applications. Rich Hawks, of Sustane Natural Fertilizer of
America, instructed on using organics for turf renovation.
The value of products and services for the improvements to
the Girl's Softball Field during the Lesco/John Deere Landscapes Athletic Field
Maintenance Day was in excess of $20,000. Many local residents and business
people donated their time and resources to assist in the ball field project,
including: Mike Manger (Kodiak Construction); Rick Rodriguez (R&D
Electric); Bob Martin Construction; The Jerman Family; Kirk DeVitis (Scenic
Source); and members of our Recreation Committee. The Township Committee
recognizes all the "Volunteers In Plumsted" as our "V.I.P.'s" who are dedicated
to serving our great Community and save all of us thousands in taxes.
The Township Committee has enlisted the volunteer efforts
of local resident, Leigh-Ann Vinciguerra, who is also a volunteer member of our
First Aid Squad, to assist in organizing Plumsted's newest initiative, the
Senior Outreach Search (SOS) to bring Federal, State and County representatives
into Plumsted on a regular monthly basis to heighten awareness of the
availability of more than 100 Senior Services. Ocean County's Office of Senior
Services; Ocean County Board of Social Services; and Community Services will be
providing representatives, referral information and services to assist our
Seniors. Leigh-Ann will begin placing information about Plumsted's SOS (Senior
Outreach Search) program in local Doctor offices and Pharmacies, as well as,
public stores and buildings.
For the convenience of our Senior population, two site
locations for Plumsted's new Senior Outreach Search (SOS) program will be
offered. On September 12th, from 10 to 12 noon, at the 31 Main Street Welcome
Center, representatives from Ocean County's Community Services
(732-367-1400/Dennis Poane) will be present to provide information on many
services available to Seniors, including the Meals On Wheels Program; Medical
Transportation Services and much more. The second site will be at the Jensen's
Retirement Community Clubhouse with the date to be announced. Anyone interested
in volunteering for Plumsted's SOS program and assisting Leigh-Ann, please
contact the Township Clerk's office or Leigh-Ann at 609-758-4004.
The next regularly scheduled public meeting with the new
administration of Township Committee members Mike McCue, Eric Sorchik, Ada
Roberts, and Deputy Mayor Ken Francis is September 5th at 8:00
