The local Registrar, Deputy
Registrar and Alternate Deputy Registrar are the only persons that may
take the
oath section of a marriage license.
In Plumsted Township,
the Municipal Clerk and Deputy
Municipal Clerk are also the Registrar and Deputy Registrar.
1. Where is the application for a marriage
license made?
If the
bride and/or groom are residents of New Jersey,
the
application is made in the municipality where either resides. If neither are residents
of New
Jersey the application is made in
the
municipality where the marriage is to be performed and is only valid in
that
municipality. Both
applicants must be 18
years of age.
2. What is the fee for a marriage license?
IThe fee
for a marriage license is $28.00, $25.00 goes to
the State Treasury to support victims of domestic violence, and $3.00
goes the
Municipality.
3. What
items are required to apply for a marriage license?
It is
requested that you bring certified copy of your birth
certificates or passports; know your Social Security Numbers; and proof
of
residency such as driver’s license, lease, tax return, etc. A witness also at least
eighteen (18) years
of age must appear with the applicants and swear to completeness and
accuracy
of the answers supplied by the applicants.
If either party has been married before,
a copy of a death certificate
or divorce papers must be provided.
4. What is the waiting period after applying
for a marriage license?
A minimum
of seventy-two (72) hours must elapse between the
time of the application and the issuance of the marriage license. In the event one of the
parties is not
available because they live out of state, etc., it is not necessary for
both
applicants to appear in order to start the waiting period. One applicant and the
witness may appear,
complete the appropriate section of the application by signing their
names, and
date the application. The
other
applicant may appear later with the SAME WITNESS, complete the other
section of
application and receive the license at that time.
