Plumsted Awarded Bicycle Route

By Mayor Ron Dancer
January 16, 2001

Nearly a year ago, the Township Committee applied to the State Department of Transportation to have Plumsted included in the first ever Statewide Bicycle Touring Route. The Township Committee has been notified that Plumsted has been selected as the only Municipality in Ocean County in which the Statewide Bicycle Touring Route will be established. With the State Bicycle Route in Plumsted, Ocean County is one of ten Counties hosting the Route (N.J. has 21 Counties).

The State Bicycle Route traverses the center of the State and will extend from the tip of South Jersey in Cape May to the most Northern section of the State in High Point. The 220 mile Route will bring bicyclists through our Community into the Town of New Egypt which will greatly benefit the local businesses with tourists, as well as, Statewide publicity.

Additionally, the State Bicycle Route Study Plan includes a possible future use and improvement of the abandoned Conrail / Union Transportation railroad corridor in New Egypt as a tourist amenity for a rail-trail recreational facility.

If you missed Plumsted Township's free rabies clinic for your cat or dog, the Ocean County Health Department also offers a free rabies clinic every Wednesday at the Ocean County Animal Facility in Jackson. Please call 732-657-8086 for an appointment. Plumsted residents may also attend a free rabies clinic on February 24th at the Jackson Township Public Works garage, on Route 528 Veterans Highway, between the hours of 1:30-3:00 PM.

Dog licenses must be purchased by January 31st. Anyone not renewing by mail, may purchase dog licenses from the Municipal Clerk's office at 2 Cedar Street. Dog licenses cannot be purchased without proof of rabies vaccination. A late fee of $5.00 will be enforced March 1st. Local dog license fees are deposited in a trust account to pay for the Animal Control Officer (Mary Kink 259-7501) services, the animal facility and rabies clinic.

Anyone interested in working part time as a clerk typist in our Construction Department should send or fax their resume / letter to the Township Administrator, Richard Kachmar (758-0123).

The first Wednesday of every month I will be at our Plumsted Branch of the Ocean County Library on Evergreen Road from 7 - 9 P.M. to meet residents and listen to their concerns. The next date is February 7th .

Residents may communicate with me by e-mail at rondancer@ushwy1.com. I would like to know the concerns of our residents, their ideas and suggestions. If I cannot answer questions directly, I will have one of our department officials respond.

The next meeting of Township Committee members Ken Francis, Bonnie Quesnel, Mike Roberts and Deputy Mayor Joe Przywara is January 22nd. Residents can preview our business agenda items, to the extent known, 48 hours prior to the meeting on our web site: www.plumsted.org.
