Despite a rainy start on Friday night which resulted in the cancellation of a Frankie Valli concert at Great Adventure, in Jackson Township, temperatures soared during the rest of the holiday weekend as Fourth of July festivities were enjoyed

Two songs into his concert the 1950s-60s crooner Frankie Valli spectators at the area theme park found themselves drenched in the metal bleachers soaked to the bone as the skies opened up.

“I’ll be back in ten minutes,” Valli said after he concluded his second song. His return was not meant to be as a security officer soon announced the shows cancellation for safety reasons as thunder and lighting intruded on the evening. A prelude of things to come for the weekend? Happily, no! Plumsted Township residents gathered for a spectacular fire works display one day earlier on Saturday night.

Residents gathered in the New Egypt section of the township at the Recreation Field for pyrotechnics display which began around dusk. Committeewoman Bonnie Quesnel, who is in charge of public events said she was pleased with the turnout and the fireworks display.

Later that evening a private fire works display was part of the schedule of events at the New Egypt Speedway at the close of their racing day. The International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers sponsored a group of 25 underprivileged boys, grades 1-6 on Saturday afternoon. The youngsters were thrilled to witness their first stock car race.

Some New Egypt residents experienced an hour and a half power loss on Monday at around 2:30 p.m. due to the excessive power use by air conditioning users. Restaurants on Main Street New Egypt were among those affected. Power outages were also noted throughout Ocean County on Monday in sections of Manchester Township, Bayville and a four hour blackout in Seaside Heights and Ortley Beach.
