New Egypt, NJ (Feb. 25) -- Rookie drivers planning to compete in New Egypt

Speedway's Sportsman division this year will get some pre-season pointers from one of the best in the business, as defending Modified champion Billy Pauch turns professor for a free-of-charge Rookie orientation session to be held March 25 at the Central Jersey track.

Pauch, one of the top professionals in the region, will instruct the novice drivers on how to race safely and successfully during the hour-and-a-half class, which will begin at 10 a.m.

"It's nice of Billy to donate his time to our incoming Rookie class," said track owner Rick Grosso, Sr. "We want these drivers to get off to a good start."

The Rookie Sportsman division looks strong for 2000, with 17 drivers already signed up to compete. Drivers are considered Rookies if they have not previously driven a full-size race car on any oval track (with the exception of Enduro competition) on more than three occasions. Those eligible for Rookie status are urged to contact the speedway at (609) 758-1900 prior to March 25 to register for the free class.

Following the Rookie Sportsman orientation, New Egypt will open its gates for a general test-and-tune practice session, scheduled to begin at 12 noon.

Pit admission for the practice is $10 with a New Egypt license. Spectators will be admitted free to the grandstands.

Billy Pauch will also be presenting four driving schools at New Egypt this season, on April 3, April 10, May 15 and May 22. Would-be drivers who would like more information on those intensive behind-the-wheel seminars can contact Pauch at (908) 996-6236.

New Egypt Speedway is set for an April 1 season opener, featuring Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stocks and the Rookie class. For information about pit licenses, pit parking or rules, please call the speedway office at (609) 758-1900.
