New Egypt girl enters "Lethal Spices" for Monmouth \ Junior Science SymposiumHolly Rae Turnage, 14, of New Egypt will be among those who are talking part in a scientific competition which idenifies the area's best and brightest high school students. Monmouth University will host the 38th Annual. Monmouth Junior Science Symposium (MJSS) on Thursday and Friday, April 6, and 7, in Pollak Auditorium. Sponsored jointly by Monmouth University, Fort Monmouth and the United States Army, Navy and Air Porce, Monmouth Junior Science Symposium is one of 48 regional competitions that are held at colleges and universities across the country. Administered by the Academy of Applied Science, the goal of MJSS is to promote research and experimentation in the sciences at' the high school level. Out of 34 papers submitted by students, from central and southern New Jersey, 10 were chosen to present their research papers to more than 350 peers and teachers from 50 high schools throughout the state. Miss Turnage who is a home school student submitted her paper, "Lethal Spices."The local student also participates in the Aqua Barons Swim team at Burlington County College, Variety of Adventures 4-H Club and the Plant Science 4-H Club. She also participated in Shakespeare's play "much Ado About Nothing" at the Burlington County Institute of Technology High School. In the community, Holly has helped to raise money for Coriel Medical Research Institute and the Ronald McDonald House. Tumage is a member of the Jacobstown Baptist Church's Living Nativity program and has also won the Timothy Award sponsored by Awana. The symposium will include various technical lectures, students will tour state-of-the-art laboratories at Monmouth University, Fort Monmouth, Brookdale Community College and Naval Weapons Station Earle. The first-place winner at MJSS will receive a four year tuition scholarship from Monmouth University and a $4.000 award. In addition, he or she will be invited to present the winning research paper to a national audience at the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium in Washington D.C., this upcoming May. Four runners-up from MJSS will also attend the national Symposium. A total of $3,000 in additional awards will be awarded at MJSS. The Fort Monmouth Chapter of the Armed Forces Communications Electronics Association will present $2,000 for outstanding papers in computer science and electronic engineering and $1,000 from the Bradley Blonder Scholarship Fund will be divided between the top three papers in each category. |
