Plumsted Business Association seeks to support
end of Mud Dump project Special to The New Egypt Press
The Plumsted Business and Merchants' Association is seeking
support opposing off-shore dumping near Sandy Hook. We received a memo from the
Ocean County Public Affairs Department Tourism Advisory Council about this
issue.
Freeholder Jim Mancini is leading a charge to prevent a Queens
oil company from dumping 90,000 cubic yards of mud at the Historic Area
Remediation Site (HARS) formerly known as the Mud Dump. This site 3.5 is miles
off Sandy Hook. The Mud Dump closed permanently in 1997, is on the shore side
of the southbound travel channel for boats.
In opposition to the Army Corps of Engineer's claim that the
Castle Astoria dredging meets quality standards, scientist Kristen Milligan for
the Sandy Hook-based Clean Ocean Action contends the dumping "had at least 16
toxins that exceeded guidelines" will drift and smother marine life. You
can support the opposing of this off shore dumping and promote clean waters, by
writing to Vice President Al Gore, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Washington, DC
20500.
