“It was so hot you could fry an egg on the sidewalk!” Well a couple of boys decided to test that theory during Tuesday afternoon’s over 100 degree heat index. John Amy,10, and his friend and neighbor Josh Singleton, 8, decided to follow up on John’s mother’s suggestion that they fry an egg on the hot pavement as an experiment Tuesday afternoon. As the sun bore down on the two young people the egg started to sizzle sunny side up. The egg wasn’t getting white around the edges but John’s mom Linda, added some bacon grease to give the egg a little help. John’s father Rev. John Amy of the Plumsted United Methodist Church was also amused by the experiment but observed the activity from a cooler spot, sipping ice water on his front porch on 9 Fort Avenue in New Egypt. John Jr. was also fanning anyone interested with a large tropical fan for a penny a minute. Unfortunately for John he didn’t get many customers as most were taking refuge in their air conditioned homes or relaxing in their pools. John Jr. checked the temperature which put the heat index at between 105 and 118 degrees on Monday. The temperature was just as hot on Tuesday afternoon as the egg was frying on the front pavement looking quite appetizing but “Tooties” and “The Plum Tree” need not worry that John and Josh will cut into their breakfast business. |
