Representatives of the New Jersey Department of Fish and
Wildlife visited Plumsted Township.on Fiday afternoon. Conservatinn Qfficers
Dominick: Fresco And Chartes Menzer joined Product Development Specialist Jerry
Stut at the local farm.
Their purpose was to oversee the addi tional acres which the
state recently pur chased for preservation purposes.
The farm which was owned by Chaeim Meltzer for several years was
saved from development through its acquisition and inclusion into the state
preservation pro gram.
Meltzer credited Plumsted Township Mayor Ron Dancer, Deputy
Mayor Joseph Przywara and the members of the town ship committee for aiming him
in the direction of preservation rather than development.
"I was thinking about it (development) but this has turned out
to be better," Meltzer said Friday afternoon. "The committee pushed me in the
right direction," Meltzer joked.
The property which lies on the intersection of Hawkin, Road and
Colliers Mills cost the state $32,000. Deputy Mayor Przywara said that the
township is now in excess of 2,200 acres of preserved proper ty. "Other farm
land is be ing negotiated through the Farmland Preservation Program."
Meltzer said he owned the land for about 15 years.
It was also reported that some local farmers will keep the
property active. "The Baker Brothers will farm it," Meltzer said. |
