eNew Egypt DoS: Fear or be feared!
By Vince Lotito Thursday, March 2, 2000
Just when you thought it was safe to surf the Internet, computer
hackers attack several major web sites, rendering them useless. In the
so-called denial-of-service attacks, web sites including Yahoo, Amazon.com,
E*Trade and ZDNet were sent off-line and remained that way for an inordinate
amount of time.
What is a Denial-of-Service Attack?
Basically, a denial-of-service (DoS) attack is any action,
initiated by individuals or otherwise, that incapacitates a server's hardware,
software or both. These DoS attacks essentially renders their targeted server
unreachable, in effect denying the services of that server to Internet users.
Typically, in a DoS attacks, malicious hacker's aim to unlawfully knock a
website's server(s) off the Internet.
The DoS is a persistent problem because these attacks are quick
and easy, and they generate immediate and noticeable results, as evidenced by
the recent rash of these attacks. They are notoriously popular among the
budding hackers with too much time on their hands, who design programs that
exploit errors and limitations or inconsistencies in the hardware and software
systems used by these Internet services.able of meeting your need and
requirements.
I know one thing, all this talk about hacks and attacks is
enough to make anybody nervous, especially when the FBI and are president
involved. Fortunately, these attacks have created more of a nuisance than
actual tragedy and they surely act as a big reminder that one can never be too
safe on the Internet. t can meet and fill your needs and your budget.
So then, how do you protect yourself?
Fore the most part, you should be aware about security issues
involving email and Internet use. This includes password choice, credit card
information, and virus protection. Here are a few simple precautions to protect
yourself when going online.
1.. Keep people from physically accessing your computer. Hackers
gain access to your computer's contents via a "back door" that allows them to
control your computer from a network.
2.. Don't open email attachments. They can install themselves
and allow hackers to gain access.
3.. Turn off file sharing if you don't use or need it.
4.. Run a monitor such as Shields Up, which can be downloaded
from www.grc.com/default.htm. This program checks the security of your
connection to the Internet. mponents through these small computer retailers.
The most important thing to do is stay informed and keep your
virus software updated. Read Symantec's Steve Trilling's article on "The Truth
About Viruses" (www.symantec.com). Not only does he describe different types of
viruses such as Trojan horses and worms, but he tells you the best ways to
protect yourself. Until then, be safe and God Bless.
