Y2K -- All's well that starts well

By Vince Lotito
Wednesday, January 5, 2000

The year 2000 has come rather quietly. After all, with all that talk about how the Y2K computer problem in government agencies and financial institutions was expected to paralyze day-to-day life for us in the U.S. and across the globe.

Admittedly I made sure that I had enough gas in the cars get us through a few days of the anticipated Armageddon. Instead, the Y2K transition was flawless, and few noticeable problems have emerged so far, making 01-01-00, 01-01-ohno!

Many believe that the year 2000 computer bug and problems with potential violence may have been exaggerated, however, there are those who have been working hard for the past several years in an effort to keep thing smooth.

The police, journalists, government agencies and banks had dedicated time and money to making sure that everything went smoothly. All of these organizations had beefed up their staffs on New Year's Eve to make sure that any problems that arose could be dealt with. Much to their relief, extra staff and precautionary measures went unused.

Now with all the Y2K behind us, let's look ahead and see what the next millennium will bring for us. I can tell you that New Egypt has plenty to look forward to.

Plumsted Township is breaking new ground with its plans for the new municipal complex, of which I hope to see more automation in Township. It would be nice to have a more robust communication and website with the ability to email the Township and the various administrative offices.

The school systems are growing and becoming more sophisticated with their technology programs. I am looking forward to a web community develop and grown around the school and the community.

More importantly, I look forward to local business, individual, groups, clubs, and organizations getting more and more involved with technology and the Internet. Our next series of articles are going to focus on some of the issues and concerns addressed in the various emails that I've received over the past several weeks.
