The graduating class of Allentown High School 1999 said good-bye to their teachers and school friends during their June 23 commencement ceremony. Also bidding farewell was Dr.Thomas Vona, who served as principal at the high school for the last 11 years.

Dr. Vona said recently that he always knew he wanted to become a teacher and that he will carry many memories of his time at AHS. Becoming a principal was another early career goal. “I’m really going to miss it,”he has stated. A recent going away party for Dr. Vona featured 200 guests at the American Hotel in Freehold where he was presented a personal computer from the school’s staff.

Substituting the words “YMCA” from the Villiage People hit to “V-O-N-A” several teachers dressed like the famous 1970s disco group sang to him. His secretary Joan Vann also sang “Through the Years” as a tribute to her former boss. Stephanie Zajkowski gave the valedictory address during the ceremony who quoted Eleanor Roosevelt “the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”

On Sunday, June 6th, 13 married women from throughout the state of New Jersey converged upon the Doubletree Hotel in Somerset to compete not only for the title of Mrs. New Jersey, but for the chance to go on and compete against 49 other married women across the country for the opportunity to be Mrs. America.

“When we were young we had dreams. We dreamed of becoming something great” the valedictorian said. “As friends, we have shared our likes and dislikes, our triumphs and our downfalls, our fears and our dreams.” Jolene Hart gave the salutatory address saying “No matter where our endeavors take us, across the country or across the world, we will always be Allentown high School’s class of ‘99.” Miss Hart added that “as we matured we sought happiness, in seeking happiness we found ourselves. We have discovered who we really are and how we want others to see us.”
