By Christina K. Nelson Staff Writer, The New Egypt Press Wednesday, June 17, 1999 North Hanover Board of Education members disussed a maintenance contract during their latest session. The contract was with Honeywell Inc. for services of air conditioning units, boiler units, and fire alarm and security system. Mrs. Sytnik, a teacher in Challenger School, questioned Why maintain something that does not work right? Superintendent Dr. Richard Carson responded Identify the problem and fix it. Part of the problem is that one air conditioner shorted out electricity and the whole wing went out. Mrs. Sytniks classroom does not have a working air conditioner. Heat sensors in the roof (in the fire alarm system the Army Core of Engineers installed) fails and, then, trips the exhaust fans which causes the a/c to go out. Board member Charles Schroeder explained, Weve been through negotiations of whose fault it is and now we are going we are going to fix it. The Board also discussed the purchase of natural gas pursuant to a bid conducted in conjunction with the school districts participation in the 1999 Burlington County Public School Natural Gas Consortium. The law firm of McManimon & Scotland, LLC, has solicited, received, and reviewed bids. Amerada Hess, Inc. is awarded the bid for natural gas for two-year term. Architectural services include designing, preparing specifications, reviewing bids, and inspecting renovations were also discussed. All five schools will have air conditioning in the multi-purpose room at 5.5% of the total budget (approximate $330,000) for a fee of $18,150. C. B. Lamb School will see new doors and a front entry at 5.5% of total budget (estimated at $13,650) for a fee of $800. Renovations include office expansion at Discovery School for a fee of $800. Lastly, all five schools will be painted (estimated budget of $250,000) for a fee of $10,000. A contract was awarded to Giberson Plumbing and Excavating in the amount of $4,540 for the removal of tires in the play area at the Discovery School. Robert W. Lord, PE, recommended this action in his letter dated June 4. Section 11g involves change orders to building expansion project contracts. An additional $3,124 will be charged for a handrail for exterior steps at C.B. Lamb School. $2,901 for Discovery School Room 106 consisting of deleting VCT, deleting student cubbies, and adding carpet. A contract with R.C. Electric in the amount of $6,107 was approved. This change order will disconnect 4 HVAC units, repair conduit and pull new wiring ($1,559) at Columbia School. At the Discovery School, custom made hardware for electrical panels ($395) will be installed as well as additional outlets in Room 106 ($2,221) will be installed. C.B. Lamb School will see removal and installation of service conduits and boxes in existing corridor ($685) and relocation of existing conduit from old boiler to new boiler ($1,932). R.C. Electric will also provide and install combination horn/strobe devices in all four schools totaling $1,220. Spina Mechanical Contracting will install a 15-gallon electric water heater in the amount of $1,550.40 This water heater is for the mop sink at Discovery School. The company will also provide a credit of $755 due to necessary repair of conduit required at Columbia School. A contract with Daniel S. Falasca in the amount of $3,386.97 was approved to remove four air conditioning units and associated work at the Columbia School. One unit ventilator and hot water piping at C.B. Lamb School will be disconnected. Further financial issues. were discussed. This resolution approved distribution of the Boards net returned funds held in trust by Burlington County Insurance Pool Joint Insurance Fund. In other news, administrators retreat will be held July 6-7, in conjunction with nearby towns (such as Northern Burlington, Bordentown, Springfield, Mansfield, Chesterfield, and Florence). They have invited Association representatives to attend the meeting so that faculty will have input on forms dealing with curriculum and professional development. Funding for this retreat is from the professional development account. Twenty five students were recommended for T-1 class. Dr. Carson stated that a teacher would be transferred to T-1 class so that there will be two classes in September. In addition, the wish list was discussed. The North Hanover Board of Education will receive approximately $7 million of Impact Aid funds. A portion of this money will go towards wish list items (items/renovations which faculty and administrators have listed as is evidenced by resolution 11). Dr. Carson read a few wish list items. These included sidewalk repair, closet arrangements, teacher desk and chairs, new stage curtain, sink replacement, new gym floor, and playground equipment. Certain items will go out to bid and in the next few weeks, the Finance Committee will get involved. Board member Schroeder wanted to commend teachers and staff for the Open House at McGuire Air Force Base. Schroeder commented that the event received positive comments from parents, some 3,500-3,700 parents and children attended the Spring Fair. Board member Vito DAmato put a motion on the floor requesting that no monies be paid to Mr. Guzzi until the water problem is solved. The motion died on the floor. Though there is no guarantee of fixing the water problem, a sum of $16,000 will be paid to Mr. Guzzi for additional work. The Board also amended the next meeting date of the North Hanover Board of Education. The next meeting date is June 21, at 7:45 p.m. It will be held at Columbia School, MAFB. C.B. Lamb School graduation will be held on June 22. |
